I'm no mechanic, so I really can not offer self done maitence advice. I had the 225s on my last boat and they drank fuel and lots oil. Other than that, they were bullet proof. I had them for three years and put about 500 hours per year on them. I did all the recommended services, 100 hour, etc., and ran fresh water through them after every use. I used ring free in the fuel, which I feel is a must with these engines.

I never had a single engine problem, except I spun a prop once. Other than that, the engines never made me stay home! sea draggin 05:44 PM. The EFI's don't drink fuel like the carb versions, oil useage is not bad either. Anyone that complains of oil useage needs to have their oil pump adjustment looked at.

You don't need a spare O2 sensor. If it fouls the boat will run you will just loose a few hundred rpms on the top end, and it will smoke a little more at idle. When the sensor goes bad 9 out of 10 times the engine goes to a rich state. The two things to have checked for proper operation is the TPS ( throttle postion sensor) adjustment, and the oil pump rod. If these two things are in spec, the fuel and oil consumption are pretty reasonable. They will also keep the O2 sensor from fouling.

Yamaha started calling several of their engines Salt Water Series (SWS) back in '94. I think the 150hp's & higher got that designation. They were regular 2-stroke outboards with oil injection.

The SWS designation was a result of some improvements for operating in a saltwater environment: more stainless steel components, improved paint job. For model year '96 or '97, Yamaha started using electronic fuel injection (EFI) on the SWS engines. They were still conventional 2-stroke engines with oil injection, but now had EFI. These were the OX66 family - speicial oxygen sensor onboard that helped determine the right fuel/oil mix. I think Yamaha called them 'SWS II' and were produced in 150/200/225/250hp.

Many people thought EFIs were only a transitional engine technology for Yamaha. They've proven to be reliable engines, though not really more fuel efficient than the pre-EFIs. The next step was the transition to direct fuel injection around 2000. Yamaha's name was 'HPDI', for High Pressure Direct Injection.

Those were initially produced in 150 & 200hp; the 225 & 250hp remained EFI until last year. Not sure if they still called them SWS II though. Yamaha does make a 225hp in HPDI in a series called VMax, but it's short shaft only, and works for flats and bass boats only (low deadrise). Not sure why they never produced it in a 25' shaft?

Hope that helps. Here's what the guy said about his twin 250 SWS ox66. 'As many of you know it's been over four months that I have been at it with Yamaha over my 2 Strokes that were nothing but a problem for me since day one. Two powerheads replaced and six fuel pumps later Yamaha finally decided that they can't get the engines to run properly. It's been said that the 250's have had there share of problems.

Well not for me any longer. They agreed to replace the 2 strokes for four strokes and gave me full retail on the 2 strokes. Installation, freight and trailering will all be on there bill. What a battle but well worth the time and effort. Now I'm just waiting for the engines to arrive at the dealer for them to do the installation, just in time to do some serious fishing.'
